America Reads and America Counts

The America Reads and America Counts programs are offered to FWS eligible students who are interested in tutoring elementary school children in Reading and Math. The America Reads program was initiated by President Clinton to ensure that all children can read by the end of grade three. Tutors are placed in local elementary schools and literacy programs. The America Counts tutors work at a local after school community agency and assist elementary and middle school children with various levels of Mathematics.

America Reads tutors attend an orientation with the America Reads coordinator to familiarize themselves with the program’s policies and procedures (see America Reads Tutor Manual) and to get placed at a potential site. Following the orientation, tutors attend a paid, four hour New Tutor Training conducted by a Reading Specialist from the Dade County School Board. Tutors will have the opportunity to role play and review the America Reads Curriculum Manual. The training is followed up with two mandatory paid in-service trainings, to boost tutor’s knowledge of the program.

This is an excellent opportunity for students who:

  • Can work 10-20 hours per week
  • Enjoy working with children
  • Are looking for field experience and networking opportunities in the school system
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Want to give back to their community

Students interested in these programs can contact ose@miami.edu or call 305-284-6000.
