Career Coach Application for 2026-2027 (Graduate Students)

 

 

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

 

The Toppel Career Center’s mission is to prepare students to make educated decisions as they explore the ever-changing landscape of careers. We achieve this through innovation and strategic connections with the University community and beyond. We are the central career center for undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni at the University of Miami. The Toppel Career Center works closely with UM faculty and staff, employers, and alumni to support students/alumni in their careers. 

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

 

The Toppel Career Center is looking for student leaders who are motivated to develop their peers through a career coaching and mentorship framework. This individual will be a strong and engaged communicator and public speaker who appreciates the diverse backgrounds and needs of all students. They will guide students through the various stages of career exploration and preparation by providing clear direction and strategies using Toppel’s various resources. Career Coaches will have the ability to develop their own professional and leadership skills while gaining experience working in a professional environment. 

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Coach students during drop-in hours on professional documents, job/internship strategies, connecting majors to careers, networking techniques, and other career-related topics using relevant Toppel resources 
  • Make appropriate student referrals to the Toppel professional staff 
  • Critique resumes on Handshake platform and provide feedback in a timely manner
  • Conduct practice interviews with students and provide positive and constructive feedback 
  • Lead interactive workshops during or after business hours for student organizations, campus departments, and classes on career related topics 
  • Staff career fairs and events throughout the year 
  • Support Toppel’s marketing and branding initiatives to attract and engage peers through activities such as tabling on campus 
  • Attend and participate in training activities
  • Stay up-to-date on new technologies related to career services 
  • Assist with the hiring process for new career coaches throughout the year 
  • Complete additional job duties and projects as assigned

  • Engage in various leadership and professional development training sessions.

Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Be available to work at least 2 full semesters (Fall 2026-Spring 2027)  
  • Must be a graduate student at UM during the 2026-2027 academic year 

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Strong oral and written communication skills  
  • Public speaking with students one-to-one and in front of small and large groups 
  • Teamwork and collaboration 
  • Organizational skills 
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to adapt to new or unfamiliar technologies

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be available to work 12-15 hours per week primarily during drop-in hours of 10am-4pm
  • Be available to attend in person week of training sessions the week before Fall Semester begins 
  • Be available for Spring Student Staff training before Spring semester begins
